Also known as Gryphon, this mythical creature was popularized in the 2nd millennium leading up into the 14th century in Ancient Greece. Often it was depicted as a lion with the head of an eagle, with or without wings. This original sculpture is a contemporary stylization of the ancient symbol of protection. Woodfired stoneware brings out subtle variations in color throughout the form. Changes in light influence the tones of the glaze (see pictures).
